Most people who saw this video of Wolf Blitzer asking this lady if she thanked God for not having murdered her using one of his murder-tornados… most of them were struck by the fact she responded that she was an atheist and how that kind of made things a little awkward. But here’s the thing that’s more striking to me: even the baby seems to think Wolk Blitzer’s a fucking idiot. The baby’s just barely begun to cogitate, and he’s already got no respect for Wolf Blitzer. He’s looking at Wolf and literally— LITERALLY— going “Oh No Oh no” and trying to keep the microphone away from Wolf Blitzer. Why has CNN not taken the hint?? None of us like this guy, right?

Are there people who think Wolf Blitzer is good at being … whatever the hell he’s supposed to be? Who are those people? Where do they live? Were they recently in car accidents? Do they have Wolf Blitzer confused with someone else? Have they lost their glasses? Can we buy them new glasses? This isn’t even a conservative-liberal thing, I don’t think— don’t we all just as Americans think this guy’s just terrible? It’s not even, like, “Oh I disagree with his views” like with a FOX News guy— I could not care less what Wolf Blitzer’s “Views” on anything are. He just doesn’t seem very good, like, at anything, at least not anything television news related. Why hasn’t anyone put a stop to this? It’s not funny anymore.

I’ve never once in my entire life heard someone talk about how reassuring they found him in a crisis or his charisma or… anything. It’s certainly not like he’s got any wisdom from his advanced age— I refer you here to his classic essay “Why are some people running for president?” (“Presidential politics in the United States – always a bit weird. It’s why I love covering politics”). Is he giving old ladies granny-boners? I don’t know. I just really think CNN should have let the baby keep the microphone. The baby at least had gravitas.

Frances Ha (2013): I really liked Greenberg a lot, plus Kicking and Screaming (not the Will Ferrell one) is one of my favorite movies (for largely sentimental reasons). This wasn’t as close to the bone as those two for me, but it sure is likable. It’s a movie about a girl in her late 20’s who’s flailing and lost and forced to grow up and trying to reconcile her fantasies with reality and… Basically, if Frances had been really super-into Law & Order: SVU, I’d have thought someone was spying on my tumblr dashboard. I guess what I respond to with Baumbach is how his characters are always forced to grow up because of a real desperation, which— I don’t know what that says about me, but…

I think what I liked about this one— and I don’t remember another Baumbach movie that this was as much the case, but it was just nice to see a movie where the story could be told through the editing more than having to pay attention to the screenwriting. I think I read that he filmed the whole thing just on a Canon 5d Mark II (which is not a high-end camera), and it’s not as precious with the dialogue as his other movies; more a movie about texture than his other movies. The California stretch in particular, I quite liked for that reason…

I think I read Gerwig and Baumbach are working on a Dreamworks cartoon together now…? Huh the huh?

Star Trek: Here’s a “Spoiler”— Everybody Hates You, Nerds (2013)— I don’t know— maybe Star Trek should be a TV show…? The problem with making Star Trek into an action-movie franchise is that they have TELEPORTERS. So anytime there’s an action scene, I’m always just sitting there going, “Use the fucking teleporter, you cocks!” And then they have to be like coming up with excuses why they can’t constantly— one of the lines in this movie was seriously something like, “The computers can’t tell the difference between Carl and a torpedo.” What? WHAT? Carl is the one who isn’t TORPEDO-shaped, you cocks! How did you program your computers???

Name of the Doctor: Haha, I had fun with the finale. It’s been a terrible season, just terrible (I’d put the Gaiman one at the low-point), but that last one— that was a good one by me, the best it’s been in a while. I think the half-season thing has been a disaster, and the retreat from the formula Davies had of having each season be a thing hasn’t really worked (even if Moffat was pretty terrible at working that formula). But they’ve set up the 50th anniversary quite nicely so…

Plus, I really enjoyed the use of typography.

I have been listening to Best Show Gems, and… yeah, I was wrong about The Best Show. I liked a lot of the things Scharpling and Wurster had done but I could never make it through a whole episode of their show. But, once these guys click with you, they’re fucking unstoppable. It’s a nuance thing, where one episode is kinda funny, but 15 of them are profound, the go-to phrases and weird pacing and improvised mythology. It’s awesome.
