Afros and butts, two subjects that are near and dear to my heart, don’t work like that.

This page… I want to like the silhouette in the first panel— I like silhouettes in general; I like how they’re like, “here’s what you need to know” without all the fuss. But the colors there— the lightning bolt at least on the preview page is smearing the gun barrel, plus don’t love that yellow for the excitement lines hiding the fact the guy didn’t want to and/or couldn’t nail the foot.  (Tough pose but … I don’t think the way that kick would land would be all that painful).  The yellow’s drawing attention towards a problem area of the drawing, which— strange choice.  Not in love with the guy’s left hand— but I always think of pain being an open-fingers kind of thing which maybe is a cliche…
The next panel doesn’t read— too far, plus a dull dead-center composition.  Where is he getting thrown from?  It just doesn’t scan— it’s just too far away and the colorist again— brown and grey against black?  I think he’s trying to keep all the temperatures (or whatever it’s called) cool or keep things kind of drab so that the girl pops more, which makes sense but … then the ladder is super-bright too so (didn’t really nail the bottom of that)… I like the background behind the girl though, I guess.
But then what has this guy written?  Lady attacks guy (it’s a lightning attack at the same time as a guy getting his ankle broken so if they put “KRAK” there, would you even know which they’re referring to?), throws guy off boat, other guys are … standing there, and she’s posing and flicking semen at them off her fingers or whatever?  Were the guys watching that whole time?  Or did they just arrive?  They’re not really posed in motion so it just reads weird.  (Something off with the guy on the left’s hoodie).  Visual hierarchy-wise, they’re going far-shot, far shot, close-up, medium.  Which… so no rhythm to that.  (Also, the way the background is in panel 3 makes it look like there’s two panels there— that’s how I read it at first at least, because the line of the crate is pointing at the line of the border of panel 1.  So my eyes keep wanting to put a panel border there even though the slope of the line is slightly different…)
And then this character— I don’t really know anything about this character, but the big hoop earrings…? I don’t know— the big hoop earrings make me kinda uncomfortable.  They feel like they’re visual signifiers instead of jewelry, but I’m not sure I’m okay with that…?  Anyways, yeah, the pose is horrible (the colorist putting two shiney lights, one on each butt-cheek— that’s not helping— why not just put an arrow with “nudge nudge wink wink you know?” written in it pointing towards where you’re guessing the genitals go, while you’re at it). Drawing hair’s pretty difficult so I’m pretty forgiving there.  But I also don’t really get this thing with superhero costumes now where they have all these little lines on them, like cutting things into slices— what’s that about?  Everything looks like Tron to me anymore… I mean, Tron’s okay, but… (I don’t get what the red thing is…?  I don’t know fashionz though…)
Also: Fearless Defenders?  That’s the title…?  Je-zus, how many times does Defenders have to get cancelled?  That comic was accidentally good for, like, 5 months in the 1970’s when everyone was on drugs.  It’s not going to happen again.  Anyways, aren’t Bendis and Deodata doing a Heroes for Hire book in a couple months?  Isn’t he going to want that character?  Just call it Cancelled Defenders.  But eh, it’s some young kid drawing it probably, so I’m sure they’ll get better.  On another book.  Because that one is probably already cancelled. Hopefully he gets to draw Spiderman’s butt soon, all sexy and Spider-juicy— people like Spiderman; not the Defenders, Spiderman.  Anyways, lunch is over…
