This show Cuckoo… I think Andy Samberg is really, really funny in this. It’s just the rest of the show is so drab— it’s a plain jane “everyone is awful to each other” middle-class-people-get-socially-embarrassed show but then with Andy Samberg kind of killing it in the middle of it all as this really terrible American hippie. I don’t really like that kind of show— Worst Week of My Life or whatever else; the characters always just have to act like idiots for those shows to work. Or I think we’re supposed to feel sympathetic for the Dad character but… It’s got that thing that really bad romantic comedies sometimes have where Rachel McAdams or whoever, her boyfriend will be Jock McViolentPreppie so the audience roots for her to get with Luke Wilson or whoever. But if she’s some girl who’d go around dating Jock McViolentPreppie to begin with, and never notice or care that he’s a raging asshole, she must be just a superficial, oblivious human being, so why would I really want Luke Wilson to get with her? Cuckoo’s sort of like that but about the parents that enable the Rachel McAdams character to begin with, so I’m not sure who to root for. I’m basically rooting for Samberg to destroy a British family’s lives because that dude is at least making me laugh…
Samberg’s enough to keep me watching it— it just feels like it should be better; Hunderby and Thick of It have both killed it so hard for me this fall, that I’ve gotten pretty spoiled though probably. (Plus all those long tracking shots in Childrens Hospital lately— that latest one in particular… oh, and Rob Riggle in the hotel in this week’s NTSF— so good). (Got bored by that first Moone Boy, but I know that was well received— it was very sweetly done, but maybe I’m just not a family-show guy…) So, yay, television. In conclusion, I am in a rut.
