1 note

Seven Psychopaths (2012): I wasn’t into this. It’s weird that they’d make a movie that feels like one of the late 90’s Tarantino-ripoff movies in 2012, especially when there’s been so much more Tarantino to ripoff since then.  This is sort of in that genre of, like, Things to Do in Denver When You’re Dead or Way of the Gun.  Plus, it’s a movie about a Hollywood screenwriter struggling to write a— SNOOOOOOORE.  Writers, writing about writing.  There’s a whole world.
I really, really like McDonagh’s writing— especially the Lieutenant of Inishmore; plus his brother’s movie The Guard is still one of my favorite movies I’ve seen this year— really loved that one.  This just felt like a big step backwards… This felt more like the trailer for In Bruges instead of what In Bruges turned out to be— more a wacky, glib “everything in quotations” crime comedy than a movie with that level of characters in it.  If it’s not all terrible (I wouldn’t say that— there are some bits that are like short stories in it that are very fun), it’s terribly disappointing.  Wordplay!
