Starburns Industries seeks to not only bring original animation projects to screens everywhere, but want to bring in the most innovative and original talent like Charlie Kaufman with Dan Harmon, Dino Stamatopoulous (Mr. Show), Duke Johnson (worked with Harmon on a stop motion ep. of Community) in this project Anomalisa.
Oh, Anomalisa! They performed that— with David Thewlis and Jennifer Jason Leigh (edited to add: oh and Tom Noonan), as a radio play at UCLA years and years ago, alongside the sublime Hopes Leaves the Theater. I remember it pretty well actually— it was very much a Charlie Kaufman thing, funny and strange (I remember really liking the ending), but basically and essentially sad. Hope blew it off the stage that night— Hope was just incredible to me; they only did Anomalisa because the production of the Coen Bros.’s play Sawbones couldn’t be mounted in LA (they’d mounted in New York before, alongside Hope).
I don’t really see how it translates to stop motion but off-hand, but it’ll be interesting to see what that team does with it. It’s not a romp — sort of a darker thing. I hope they get Jennifer Jason Leigh again— she was … well, she was Jennifer Jason Leigh.
